Barber Companies is completely renovating the historic Barber-Highland Building at the corner of 20th Street South and Highland Avenue. The building is currently for lease and will be suitable for occupancy in November.
This iconic building sits at the heart of Five Points South, Birmingham’s first suburb and the City’s enormously popular and historic living, shopping and recreational district. Five Points is adjacent to the 100-block medically-oriented University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) campus with its 23,000 employees, 18,000+ students and 1.2 million patient visits each year. Within 2 miles of the Barber-Highland Building, the daytime population is more than 204,000 people, and Barber-Highland sits only a mile from the center of downtown Birmingham.
The National Historic Register describes the Barber-Highland Building as one of the two most outstanding examples of ornate Italian Revival architecture in Birmingham. The building was constructed in 1928 and past tenants include Lyle Drugs, Highland Avenue Creamery, Abercrombie-Murrah, Inc., Cadillac Café, Dugan’s and many others. The building is being redeveloped to historic preservation standards.
